Recently, we completed a full remodel of a home in NE Portland, Oregon in the Woodlawn neighborhood. This historic neighborhood is developing and changing quickly and we had the privilege to play a small part in the transformation that is happening. The Woodlawn neighborhood is the oldest settled area in the old Albina area -- now referred to as the Woodlawn Historic District. It was Initially settled in the 1860's as a rural farming village. Today, Woodlawn is a dynamic blend of many cultures and unique businesses with surrounding residential homes that are wide-spread both in character and design.
Before we started working on this home, it was closed off, dull and in desperate need of a remodel that would restore its former character. The kitchen is where most of the major renovations occurred. We took down the wall that divided the kitchen and living room, which ultimately made a world of difference and opened up the space.
After stripping the home down nearly to its bones, we began to bring new life with all of the new and some locally- sourced products. The laminate flooring was hand selected to bring in a fresh base to build the rest of the design on. We chose a beautifully grained quartz countertop to bring together the crisp white cabinets with the grey flooring. As for the locally-sourced items, we wanted to bring the spirit of Portland into the home. We selected shelving, shelf brackets, and some of the other small details with this in mind. One of the most dramatic and defining features of this home is the handcrafted tile used for the kitchen backsplash.
We loved this project and being able to share it with you. If you would like to stay connected, see more photos and read details about this home, an article feature is published in the Fall 2018 edition of Oregon Home magazine.
